EndNote Desktop: Setting Up Sync

Information on how to use many of the tools and features in EndNote, a tool that can help you store and organize citation information and format bibliographies and papers.

Syncing Libraries

After syncing your desktop and online references,  all your references and attachments will be available both on your desktop and online through any Internet browser. References can also be synced to the EndNote iPad app and to EndNote on the desktop on your other computers. (Hint: Open a new empty library for the first sync on other computers.)

Sync and Share

  • Access the same library from different PCs and iOS devices (iPad & iPhone).
  • EndNote allows you to synchronize the references (including file and figure attachments) in your EndNote desktop library with the references in your EndNote online library.

Syncing

If you have enabled the Automatic Sync (Sync Automatically) option, then the library will sync every 15 minutes. EndNote will alert you if you attempt to close your library before it has synchronized.

  1. Go to the Edit menu (or EndNote menu on the macOS) and select Preferences > Sync Preferences.
  2. Click the Enable Sync button to go to the EndNote online Login dialog.
  3. Click the Sign-Up button to begin the registration and activation process. Follow the online instructions.

During the first sync, all references in both the EndNote desktop and online libraries will be copied to the other library, as well as all group information, but only custom groups will be displayed in EndNote online. Once synced, any change made in any synchronized library will be reflected in all synchronized copies of the library.
