Open Educational Resources (OER)

WVU Open Textbook Review

We host an annual Open Textbook Workshop and Textbook Review in the spring. This is a two hour session where you can discover open textbooks in your discipline. After the workshop, you will be asked to write a short review of an open textbook. In addition to a closer look at an OER in your field, your review will also benefit other faculty considering adopting open textbooks. You’ll receive a $200 stipend for your participation and a written review.

Information about the 2023 Textbook Review forthcoming.

If you have questions about this workshop or open textbooks, please contact Martha Yancey, Chair of the WVU Libraries Open Educational Resources committee, at 304-293-5039 or Martha.Yancey@mail.wvu.edu. You can also visit the open educational resources initiatives webpage - https://library.wvu.edu/about/oer/initiatives - for more information.

Affordable Syllabus Review

The Affordable Syllabus Review is a service for WVU instructors who are interested in reducing the cost of course materials by working with a librarian to review their syllabus for affordable, free, and/or openly-licensed alternatives. Participating in this review service can help reduce costs for your students, support you in revising or creating OER, and/or aim to find more diverse course content. We can consult with you to do the following:

  • Identify no cost course materials to replace existing texts in your syllabus, such as OER or library licensed materials
  • Modify existing OER or create your own OER
  • Identify course materials that represent perspectives and content from/about historically marginalized populations and scholars.

To request an affordable syllabus review, fill out this form. For questions about the service, contact one of the Open Education Committee members, or your liaison librarian.
