APA 7th Edition Citation Style Guide

A quick guide to using APA citation style

Film or Video

General Rule:

Director-last-name, First-initial (Director). (Year). Title [Film]. Studio.

Example:

Koster, H. (Director). (1950). Harvey [Film]. Universal Studios. 

Streaming Video

General Rule:

Uploader last-name, First-initial. (Year). Title [format] Website Name. URL 

  • List the person who uploaded the video as author even if they did not create the work. Note the contribution of others in the text narrative. 
  • If both the user name and author's real name are known use the real name followed by the user name in square brackets. 

Example:

CycloneB. (2010). How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop? [Video].

YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xY2A7WIOqCA

 

TV Show from a Series

General Rule:

Writer-last-name, First-initial. (Writer), & Director-last-name, First-initial. (Director). (Year).Title of episode [TV series episode]. In Executive producer last-name, First-Initial (Executive producer), Title of series. Production Company.

Example:

   Whedon, J. (Writer), Des Hotel, R. (Writer), Batali, D. (Writer), & Sarafian, D. (Director). (1998). Killed by death [TV series episode]. In J. Whedon, et al. (Executive Producers), Buffy the Vampire Slayer. WB Television Network.  

 

Music Recording

General Rule:

Writer last name, First-initial. (Year of recording). Title of song [Recorded by artist if different from writer]. On Title of Album. Label. (Year of original composition if different from recording date).

If the song is not associated with an album omit that part of the citation. 

Example:

   Frisell, B. (1999). The pioneers. On Good dog, happy man. Nonesuch Records.
