Starting to research in a new topic or field? Sometimes a web based search is exactly what you need to establish a knowledge foundation. Keep a couple things in mind:
This is especially true of information found on the open web, via Google or other search engines. While there is high-quality information to be found, there is also utter crap. As well as everything else in between. Whether for one of your courses or for your personal use, one of the key parts of the research process is evaluating your information, i.e., using your CRAAP detector.
Some research studies are of higher quality than others. You will use a technique called critical appraisal to determine a study's quality (internal validity), and applicability (external validity). You will learn more about this skill and how to apply the practice of critical appraisal to your patients during your program.
For now, you can use the below Critical Appraisal Worksheets to help you determine the quality of a study. Select the worksheet that corresponds to the research design of the study you are examining (i.e., if your study is a randomized controlled trial (RCT), use the RCT checklist).
