Understanding Copyright: eReserves and Reserves

eReserves

  • eReserves allow faculty to place materials such as articles, book chapters and media on the eReserves section of the Libraries homepage.  Students may then access the materials by logging onto the class eReserve page using their WVU MyID username and password
  • Not all material may be added to eReserves.  eReserves staff will determine what materials can be placed on eReserves.
  • Non-book material including lecture notes, slides and tests, may be placed on eReserves.
  • Electronic documents can be accepted formats such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or .pdf.  Please contact eReserves staff to ensure that any other format is acceptable.

Traditional Reserves

  • Traditional print reserve allows faculty to place books, articles and media in the Reserve section of the library.  Students may come into the library to access the material without fearing that another student may monopolize the material by checking it out
  • Traditional reserve materials for students' coursework are made available for checkout during normal library hours
  • Traditional reserves materials include books (both library owned and personal copies), CDs or DVDs.  They may also be photocopies of journal articles or book chapters, homework, old tests, lecture notes, etc.
  • All material circulates for 2 hours at time and may be renewed, for another 2 hours, only once.
  • Items on 2 hour reserve may be charged out overnight within 2 hours of closing.  They will be due when the library opens the following day, but no later than 8:30 AM.
  • At the discretion of library staff or the faculty, traditional reserve may be eligible for in-building use only

Placing items on Reserve

To place items on eReserves or traditional reserves "Reserves"), fill out the Reserve form and email or bring it to Access Services.

Please include a class syllabus when turning in the first reserve submission for a class.  However, this should not take the place of the list of items requested for reserve.

Reserve items are processed in the order received.  Allow 4 business days for processing materials before giving out assignments involving the items on Reserve.
