Library of Congress Subject Headings

Subject Headings are terms or phrases that best summarize the overall contents of a work and provide access to its most important topics, and they can be very useful as you search for books. For this class, time and geography will provide great starting points as you define the scope of your historical inquiry. For example, if you're interested in U.S. waste disposal practices but haven't already pinpointed your topic, Library of Congress Subject Headings Refuse and Refuse Disposal--United States would be a good initial search.

You can explore LCSH on the Library of Congress website and through our catalog. Go to Advanced Search and set the filter to "Subject Heading."

In print books, you can typically find LCSH on the copyright page.

In the library catalog, click "View Description" to see the book's LCSH. You can click on any of the subjects listed to view ALL items that correspond to that subject.
