Best Practices & Guidelines for LibGuide Authors

This guide provides tips & resources to help WVU librarians create better LibGuides and save time in the process.

Getting Started

When creating a LibGuide, always keep your audience for that Guide in mind. The audience and their purpose for using the Guide will drive its content and design. For example, a guide for undergraduates in English 102 would be very different than one for graduate students in a British literature class.
 
Make the Guide’s purpose and organizational style immediately clear to a user.

Guide Naming Standards

The goal of uniform guide naming is to make it as easy as possible for researchers to search for and identify the guides that will be useful to them. In particular, students are more likely to use research guides titled with their course numbers than they are to use a general subject guide on the same topic.

  • Course Guides should follow this pattern: DENT 752: Community Dentistry (Michaels)

and include the Subject AbbreviationCourse Number; Course Name; Instructor (if applicable)

 

  • Subject/Discipline Guides should follow this pattern: Popular / American Culture Research Guide

and include the Discipline Name; the words Research Guide; Target Audience Description (if applicable)

Guide Standards

  • Include purpose of the LibGuide in the Guide’s Short Description.
  • Use Title Case when naming tabs
  • All external links open in new windows by default in LibGuides v.2. Please do not change this.
  • All LibGuides should have friendly URLs assigned.
    • For example, http://libguides.wvu.edu/english102
  • Assign appropriate subjects to your LibGuide.
  • We haven't found assigning tags helps people find what they're looking for. Don't feel like you need to use them.
  • If you copy another LibGuide or borrow a significant amount of material, please credit that person.
  • Please copy standard boxes for commonly-used resources like Ask-a-Librarian. This LibGuide has standardized boxes for commonly-used sources for re-use.

Profile Box

In LibGuides v.2, your profile information is kept in the general LibApps section. To edit anything, make sure the blue box in the L-hand corner says "LibApps" and go to "My Profile" in the top yellow bar.

  • All guides should have a profile box on the front page. It isn’t necessary, however, to have profile boxes on all pages.
    • In the new LibGuides system, there is a specific profile box type you can place anywhere in your guide
  • Use a photo (highly recommended) or an appropriate icon or image to represent you. 
    • If you choose not to use a photo in your profile box, change the dropdown under "Title & Image" to say “Do not display a profile image.”
  • Include at least one method of contact 
  • LibGuides v.2 auto-populates your profile's Subjects with the categories of guides you own.
  • If you use a chat widget, use one that directs to your personal IM.  Do not use the Ask-a-Librarian widget in your profile box as this confuses users.
    • To add your chat widget, in the "Widgets" section of My Profile, paste the Libraryh3lp code into "Other Widgets"
