Art History Research: Home

a guide to the Art History resources available at the WVU Libraries

Getting Started

Welcome to WVU's Art Research Guide. This page is designed to help you use the paper and digital art resources available at WVU. A good starting place is the Grove Dictionary of Art. This is available both online to WVU faculty, staff and students, and on paper in the Evansdale Library reference collection. The word dictionary is a bit misleading, as this is a 34-volume set with links to over 130,000 online images.

For books available in the WVU collection, consult MountainLynx.
To locate books in libraries across North America consult
WorldCat.  For an international view, search ArtLibraries.net.

If you're looking for a very narrow topic (ex: 19th century Mexican watercolor painting) consider searching more broadly (ex: watercolor painting), then look in the tables of contents and indexes of these books for your particular focus.

Don't hesitate to ask for help.  Library help is available by chat, telephone, e-mail, and in person.

Visiting Artist Lectures

Are you looking for the Visiting Artist Lectures?  These are hosted here:  https://mediasite.lib.wvu.edu/Mediasite1/Catalog/catalogs/art    The most recent lectures are listed first.

Summon It!

Summon is the WVU Libraries' meta-search engine.  This is a great way to find all types of resources, and is especially useful for cross-disciplinary topics.

If you're accessing from off-campus, log in with your MyID username and pasword to have full-text access.
